    Web development evolution: the assimilation of web engineering security

    In today’s e-commerce environment, information is an incredibly valuable asset. Surveys indicate that companies are suffering staggering financial losses due to web security issues. Analyzing the underlying causes of these security breaches shows that a significant proportion of them are caused by straightforward design errors in systems and not by failures in security mechanisms. There is significant research into security mechanisms but there is little research into the integration of these into software design processes, even those processes specifically designed for Web Engineering. Security should be designed into the application development process upfront through an independent flexible methodology that contains customizable components

    FPGA implementation of real-time human motion recognition on a reconfigurable video processing architecture

    In recent years, automatic human motion recognition has been widely researched within the computer vision and image processing communities. Here we propose a real-time embedded vision solution for human motion recognition implemented on a ubiquitous device. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, we have developed a fast human motion recognition system with simple motion features and a linear Support Vector Machine(SVM) classifier. The method has been tested on a large, public human action dataset and achieved competitive performance for the temporal template (eg. ``motion history image") class of approaches. Secondly, we have developed a reconfigurable, FPGA based video processing architecture. One advantage of this architecture is that the system processing performance can be reconfigured for a particular application, with the addition of new or replicated processing cores. Finally, we have successfully implemented a human motion recognition system on this reconfigurable architecture. With a small number of human actions (hand gestures), this stand-alone system is performing reliably, with an 80% average recognition rate using limited training data. This type of system has applications in security systems, man-machine communications and intelligent environments

    Free the sheep: Improvised song and performance in and around a minecraft community

    Recent work around the use of virtual world video games in educational contexts has conceptualised literacies as communal processes, whilst considering complex notions of collaboration through participants' multiplicity of presence in hybrid virtual / physical locations. However, further research is necessary in order to help us understand how the complex interactions afforded by such spaces influence - and are influenced by - children's social relationships. This article draws upon data from a year-long ethnographic study, investigating a group of ten and eleven year old children's engagement with the video game 'Minecraft' as they collaborate to build a 'virtual community'. With a particular focus on the children's improvised singing and use of song during the club, I examine how their creative practices - drawing on a wide range of self-selected resources, played out both in and out of the virtual world - help to fundamentally shape the nature of the space around them. Furthermore, through examination of one particular performance, I demonstrate the importance of ensuring that such details are not written out of accounts of children interactions around technology, if we are to understand the true potential of such environments

    Chile’s Banking System: A Decade Of Change

    ABSTRACT In this paper, I investigate a decade of change between foreign and domestic banks in the Chilean banking system from 2001-2013. Using the Backward and Forward Stepwise Selection method to construct my panel regressions, I compare my findings to those of previous author(s) found in the literature. I consider the factors that determine interest rate spreads, and find that all banks have become more efficient since 2000 and that non-performing loans for both domestic and foreign banks lead to higher bank spreads. I find also, that bank concentration leads to higher spreads for domestic banks. This paper theorizes that diversification of the banking system with the establishment of niche banks can lead to the reduction of bank concentration when placed in selectively highly concentrated sectors of the economy. Further, diversification allows for increased competition in those sectors, without affecting the other sectors of the economy and the overall health of the banking system. I find that concentration among the Top-5 banks in the Chilean banking system has decreased since 2000

    A fast-wave pulse in a simple, cold, inhomogeneous MHD model plasma is constructed by Fourier superposition over frequency of harmonic waves that are singular at their respective Alfven resonances. The pulse partially reflects before reaching the resonance layer, but also partially tunnels through to it to mode convert to an Alfven wave. The exact absorption/conversion coefficient for the pulse is shown to be given precisely by a function of transverse wavenumber tabulated in Paper I of this sequence, and to be independent of frequency and pulse width.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted (15 Nov 2010) by Solar Physics.     Elemental depth profiling of thin film chalcogenides using MeV ion beam analysis

    The comprehensive characterisation is one of many technical challenges in the fabrication of photovoltaic devices from novel materials. We show how the application of recent advances in MeV ion beam analysis, providing the selfconsistent treatment of Rutherford backscattering and particle induced X-ray emission spectra, makes a new set of powerful complementary elemental depth profiling techniques available for all thin film technologies, including the chalcopyrite compound semiconductors. We will give and discuss a detailed analysis of a CuInAl metallic precursor film, showing how similar methods are also applicable to other films of interest
